Hunt Design Home > Custom Yachts
Hunt Associates designs unique, custom pleasure boats developed to the exact requirements of the private client. Many of our clients come to us because we show them designs that are neither faddishly modern nor literal recreations of boats from times past. Time and again we hear people say they want modern performance, but just don't like the look of boats now on the market. They prefer another look and come to us for something which we might be justified in calling the Hunt Style.

Ray Hunt was a designer of sailboats as much as powerboats, and in the days of wooden sailboats overt "styling" was frowned on. The early Ray Hunt powerboats therefore show a good deal of restraint in their style, particularly when compared to some automobile-influenced boats of the fifties. In general, our roots in sailboat design discourage arbitrary and discontinuous shapes, and encourage careful manipulation of flare and tumblehome, sheerlines, moulding lines, cambers, and all the other subtleties of classic shape definition.
The Hunt Style is also reflected in arrangements and configurations we like to use. When we can, we keep interiors "loose," emphasizing usable space instead of gimmicky features. We avoid wrapping the exterior of the boat around critical dimensions as well. We like to make sure our boats have good measure of exterior space, preferably low in the boat and with access to the water. The "wedding cake" look is something we avoid. When we can, we like to make the hull a little bigger than accommodations require; the boat runs better, looks better and is more comfortable, with little or no sacrifice in cost and running economy.
Just as the Hunt boats of 20 years ago still look handsome and contemporary today, we're confident that our newest designs, whether traditional or contemporary in style, will not be outdated 20 years hence.
Styling aside, Hunt boats are expected to meet the requirements of cruising at speed in sea conditions that would keep many boats in port, and this in itself makes styling a more rigorous process. Years of experience designing patrol and pilot boats on the Hunt hull have taught us what works at sea and what doesn't.
