Royal Huisman

Zwerver is the first motor yacht built by the Royal Huisman Shipyard to a design by the respected American naval architects, C. Raymond Hunt Associates. Hunt is known for its continuing series of conservative, handsome deep-V planing hulls. Prescribed to weather the most rigorous conditions, the designs provide the marriage of high speed and seakeeping in all conditions. These are qualities attractive to any experienced offshore sailor making the transition from sail to power, as was the case with "Zwerver's" knowledgeable owner.

"Zwerver" is powered by twin 660HP MTU diesels turning Lips fixed pitch propellers, which drive her at a respectable 24 knots. In addition to the proven deep-V hull form and efficient propulsion system, Hunt gave "Zwerver" added refinements utilizing propeller tunnels and grounding keels. Tunnels allow the "tucking in" of the propeller blades. Bringing them closer to the hull focuses propeller thrust within the tunnel as well as protecting delicate blade tips from possible grounding in coastal or shoal water cruising. A configuration in conjunction with the specialized keel, which affords additional safety with performance gain. "Zwerver's" flat, horizontal chines and carefully shaped lift strips suppress spray in addition to adding dynamic stability in all conditions.

Speed and balance are one important issue in every design, but it is heavy weather that is testament to the Hunt philosophy and the skills of Royal Huisman Shipyard. When caught out in a blow, the yachtsman has a significant option other than running for a sheltered harbor - he can press on with confidence. Upwind in rough seas, "Zwerver's" high deadrise forebody cuts into the head seas and reduces slamming. Off wind, the cutaway forefoot and deep stern prevent broaching or bow steering. In extreme conditions, when speed must be reduced for safety and crew comfort, "Zwerver's" hull form serves well in a displacement mode, its depth and lowered concentration of weight giving it a relatively easy motion with good control in confused and steep wave top conditions.
